Michigan’s Great Pumpkin Has Been Picked And Could Break Records

Every year pumpkins seem to get bigger and bigger. One pumpkin in Michigan could be this year's record-breaker.

Michigan Pumpkins

Pumpkins come in all shapes and sizes. What I have learned as I have gotten older is that there are a lot of different kinds of pumpkins with some that can grow giant in size.

I grew up only knowing about the pumpkins we would get at the store or the pumpkin patch and they were always the standard orange pumpkin with the green stem. We would carve the pumpkins and sometimes bake the seeds which are delicious.

Michigan Man Grows Giant Pumpkin

A Michigan man by the name of Frank Morse who lives in Waterford picked up the hobby of growing pumpkins during the pandemic. What started as a hobby soon turned into a passion.

Morse spent a lot of time researching pumpkins. How to grow the big ones, what type of seeds to use, what kind of environment to grow them in, and how to care for them so they would reach their full potential. One wrong move and months of work could go down the drain.

Morse hopes the pumpkin will weigh over 2,700 pounds in hopes of breaking the world record of 2,702 lbs, the United States record of 2,528 lbs, and the Michigan record of 2,118. So far he believes he's got the state record in the bag.

Frank does get some help from his dad Mike in taking care of the pumpkin each day. Feeding the pumpkin each day takes about 3 to 4 hours.

Seeds From Giant Pumpkins Can Bring in Big Money

Each seed can sell for $100 dollars. There can be anywhere between 100 and 500 hundred seeds inside and if you do the math, that is not a bad profit. If Morse breaks the world record the seeds can go for as high as $200 each.

Giant Pumpkin has Been Picked and Weighed

According to WXYZ-TV, the pumpkin has been picked and weighed. Morse's pumpkin weighed in at 2,350 pounds. The next stop to see if the pumpkin is a state record will be at a festival in Ohio where the official weigh-in will take place.
