The first elk hunt period for 2026 is from September 23 through October 4 which is a 12-day, continuous period of hunting. The first period used to start in late August and was broken up into three, four-day sessions.

The second elk hunt period for 2026 is from December 1 through 15, giving hunters 15 days to go after that bull elk. This is a huge upgrade to the previous season that ran December 13-21 when the weather can be much worse and too close to holidays that may keep hunters from applying for the second period.

I was born and raised in Michigan and have hunted a variety of game in the state. This will be my first time applying for an elk tag because these new hunt periods are more in line with the weather, the elk mating season, and will allow me to better plan my hunt if I'm lucky enough to be selected.
