The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has updated a few deer hunting rules for 2025 that hunters should be aware of.

Michigan Deer Hunting

For most Michigan hunters, the dream of harvesting the big buck is always at the top of the list, but for some hunters, filling the freezer is more of a priority. I fall somewhere in the middle. Yes, I’d like to get the big buck, but I will also harvest a doe to put some meat on the dinner table.

There is an issue with Michigan's deer herd: there are too many does (female deer). For many years, Michigan hunting focused more on bucks, but if you wanted a doe, you could buy a permit. Now that there are fewer hunters in the woods, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is trying to find more ways to get more hunters to harvest does to help keep a balance in the herd.

Last year, the DNR made several rule changes to encourage hunters to take more does, and recently, a few new updates were announced.

According to FOX 17, hunters will have expanded access to both public and private land in the Lower Peninsula during the early and late antlerless firearm seasons.

I strongly encourage hunters to take advantage of the early and late antlerless firearm season to help get the numbers of does more in balance with the numbers of bucks.

My boys and I plan to harvest a doe each early in archery season, so we have our meat in the freezer, and then focus on bagging the big buck the rest of the season. I have spoken to my neighbors who hunt their property near mine, and they plan on doing the same. In a couple of years, our buck hunting will substantially get better.
