Illegal Walleye Haul Found on Detroit River
Spring walleye fishing on the Detroit River is among the best in the world. Anglers from northern Michigan made the trip and were caught with more than twice the legal daily limit.
Walleye Fishing the Detroit River
April, May, and early June bring some of the best walleye fishing in the world to the Detroit River. Anglers line the shore and pack the river in boats, traveling from all over to fill their coolers.
Detroit River anglers mainly catch walleye in spring by vertical jigging heavy jigs (3/4 to 1.5 ounces) tipped with plastics or minnows to keep the bait near the bottom in the strong current.
Jigging is 90% of the game, with anglers targeting walleye in deep 20- to 50-foot channels while keeping their lines vertical beneath the boat, often in the Upper River near the Ambassador Bridge or farther south near Trenton.
Fishermen Busted With Double Walleye Limit in Detroit
That’s an incredible haul of Detroit River walleye, but there was one major problem: the anglers were over the legal limit by 34 fish.
According to a Michigan Department of Natural Resources press release, five anglers rented a house during their Detroit River fishing trip. Conservation officers allegedly observed the group taking extra fish before serving them with a search warrant.

The anglers were allowed six fish per day each, but conservation officers found more than 12 fish per person when they searched the group’s vehicle and coolers. The DNR issued misdemeanor citations to all five fishermen
