Road rage has evolved from an occasional annoyance marked by honking horns and shouted insults into a serious public safety threat. Over the past decade, firearm-related road rage incidents have increased by more than 400%.

Road rage incidents have surged as more drivers carry firearms. Since the start of the pandemic, cases involving the brandishing or discharge of a gun have doubled, contributing to more than 100 deaths each year.

A road rage incident that occurred in Grand Rapids this week, involved a shooting and multiple charges being filed.

Man Accused in Road Rage Shooting on Grand Rapids Roadway

According to FOX 17, on June 17, Nicholas Hofstra allegedly fired at another driver and then physically assaulted him during a road rage incident near the intersection of East Beltline Avenue and 28th Street.

The incident occurred during rush-hour traffic in Grand Rapids shortly after 5 p.m. Grand Rapids Police Department have not yet released details about what led to the alleged shooting and assault.

Authorities have charged 38-year-old Hofstra with assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to inflict great bodily harm less than murder, unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, and possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony. If convicted, he could face a sentence of up to life in prison.
