Murder Charges Filed in Death of 255-Pound 7-Year-Old

According to WJRT, 40-year-old Damien O'Brien and his 41-year-old wife, Jessica O'Brien, have been charged with second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture in connection with the death of their 255-pound, 7-year-old son.

Police were called to the O’Brien home after a report of a child in distress. The couple’s son, Casper O’Brien, was taken to Hurley Medical Center, where he died shortly after arrival from dilated cardiomyopathy that led to heart failure.

Casper, who was 7, was estimated to have weighed 255 pounds, a level considered severe obesity. According to police, he did not have a pediatrician and had only one documented medical visit.

The father reportedly had stable employment and health insurance, which could have provided access to regular pediatric care. However, Casper did not receive consistent medical attention. On the morning he died, the parents had taken the family dog to a veterinarian appointment.

The O’Brien family is currently being held in the Genesee County Jail without bond. If convicted, the torture charge could carry a potential life sentence, while the second-degree murder charge could result in up to 10 years in prison.
