When parents send their children to school, they trust that all teachers have been properly vetted and are safe around their kids. That trust has been shaken by allegations involving a former Grand Rapids elementary school teacher.

Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) thoroughly screen teachers through state-mandated background checks, credential verification, and the E-Verify system. Candidates must also hold valid Michigan teaching certificates and pass thorough screenings before being hired.

Michigan law requires all educators to undergo national criminal history background checks through fingerprinting. District officials or approved contractors also use the Internet Criminal History Access Tool to review recent public records across Michigan counties.

Despite these safeguards, a former Grand Rapids elementary school teacher passed the hiring process, secured a position, and is now alleged to have abused at least four students while employed.

According to FOX 17, 57-year-old former Grand Rapids elementary school teacher George Marshall has been charged with ten counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Marshall worked at Hope Academy of West Michigan until a student came forward and reported the alleged misconduct.

Detectives with the Grand Rapids Police Department initially identified three victims, but four additional students later came forward with similar allegations. Investigators believe there may be more children who were abused by Marshall.
