3D Technology is Being Used to Score Deer Antlers
Many Michigan hunters like to have their big bucks scored. New 3D technology will give hunters a chance to try this out in West Michigan on opening day.
What is Scoring a Buck?
When a hunter finally harvests a big Michigan buck, they usually get it scored by contacting a certified measurer from organizations like Commemorative Bucks of Michigan (CBM). Hunters trying to save a buck (no pun intended) will break out a measuring tape.
Here is a list of things hunters or a certified measurer will measure.
- Tools - Flexible steel tape that measures in eighths of an inch and a score sheet.
- Measure Main Beams - Measure the length of each main beam from the bottom of the burr to the tip.
- Measure Tines - Measure the length of each tine from where it leaves the main beam to the tip. Tines must be at least one inch long to be counted.
- Measure Circumference - Measure the circumference of each main beam at four different points as indicated in scoring diagrams.
- Measure Inside Spread - Measure the widest inside span between the main beams.
- Calculate Score - Add all your measurements together to get a gross score. For official record book entries, deductions are made to get the net score.

New 3D Tech Revolutionizes Deer Antler Scoring
Many Michiganders own their own 3D printers. Some have even started their own business using them. A local deer processing facility is now using similar technology to offer precise 3D scoring technology for big bucks harvested.
According to WOOD TV, Dynamic Metrology Services will be offering 3D scans of antlers for $50 at Barb's Deer Processing near Rockford on opening day of whitetail firearm season.
This new micron 3D measuring ability is the most precise scoring available on the market.
This technology allows for 2D and 3D measurements which hunters can use to have replica antlers made with a 3D printer. The 2D files can be used to make T-shirts, stickers, and more.
