Kent County Animal Shelter At Capacity

The Kent County Animal Shelter posted on Sept. 2 that all of their kennels are full. Right now they are caring for 152 animals at their Fuller Ave. facility in Grand Rapids.

If you are an animal lover in West Michigan, your heart breaks a little every time you see a post like this. I feel like I have written this exact story many times. Every summer seems to end the same way, with shelters pushed to their absolute limits and staff working around the clock.

As the shelter pointed out, these pets are not broken or unwanted. Life just happens. Housing changes, sudden expenses, or family emergencies force people into impossible choices. These dogs and cats are special and loved. They each have their own unique personalities, and they are fully ready to bring that love into a new home.

The shelter needs our help today because they know more animals will inevitably need a safe place tomorrow. When the kennels are full, the safety net for the next emergency vanishes.

There are multiple ways to help:

• Adopt: Take advantage of the $70 dog adoption special through Saturday, Sept. 5.
• Keep Pets Safe: Double-check your yards, microchip info, and collars to make sure your own four-legged family members stay safely at home and out of the shelter system.
• Share: Share the shelter's posts on social media. Your single share could reach the exact family waiting for a new best friend.
• Foster or Donate: Opening your home temporarily or dropping off supplies frees up vital space and resources for the staff on Fuller Avenue.
