How Long is the Wait for a Kidney Transplant?

When it comes to kidneys, a patient needs a perfect match. So, not just any kidney will do.

The average wait time for a kidney on the national average is three to five years. But in Michigan, the wait is about four to six years for a kidney from a living donor.

The reason a kidney recipient wants a kidney from a living donor is that transplant kidneys have a shelf life. Meaning that the kidney will last for around 18 to 20 years. When a person gets a kidney from someone who has died and donated, the life of that kidney will be around 10 to 11 years.

Michigan Man Puts Up Billboard To Get Kidney

The Michigan man who put up the billboard in search of a kidney from a living donor is named Scott Schneider. He's a physics instructor at Lawrence Technical University in Southfield.

Fortunately for Schneider, his current kidney works a little so his kidney dialysis treatments work well for him currently, but that can change as he gets older. His best option would be a kidney transplant from a living donor so he and his family have gotten very creative.

According to WXYZ-TV, the billboard is located in Detroit near 8 Mile Road and the Lodge Freeway. The company that owns the billboard was very generous and donated a free digital ad for one of its digital billboards.
