It's a well-known fact that Yoopers are a different breed of Michigander. Living in areas that are largely detached from city life and facing some pretty extreme winter weather has made the brave few who live in the Upper Peninsula (UP) full-time a group of tight-knit Michiganders who wear their Yooper badges with pride.

The UP makes up 3% of Michigan's overall population, but accounts for $1.6 billion in annual tourism revenue, meaning the locals put up with a lot of visitors year-round. You'd think this could make the locals grumpy, but that's not the case, especially for Marquette, which was recently named the friendliest small town in the Northern US.

Marquette, Michigan

With a population of 21,845, Marquette is the UP's largest city and also its most popular destination, attracting tourists who come to the top of the UP to enjoy the shores of Lake Superior at Black Rocks or Sugarloaf Mountain.

Northern Michigan University (NMU) is also based in Marquette, bringing another round of guests to the area to live, study, and explore. Inside town, Marquette has a strong craft beer scene, so visiting spots like Blackrocks Brewery, whose beer is so popular it is available all around the state, is a must.

What Makes Marquette So Friendly

Marquette was named the friendliest city in the northern US by World Atlas, one of the internet's oldest websites and leading publishers of geographic information and more. World Atlas claims that what makes Marquette so friendly comes down to hospitality. The city relies on tourism and has managed to extend the amicability among locals to those who are visiting.

...residents and town officials alike have done a stellar job of maintaining the open-armed culture that gives Marquette its friendly edge

World Atlas highlights the high number of volunteer-run projects and public events throughout the city, as well as the trails maintained by volunteers. Locals treat visitors as if they were locals, offering recommendations and respect to everyone they come into contact with.

If you get the chance this summer, make sure to make a stop at Marquette. While you're in the UP, be sure to visit these other spots as well.
