Where to Find Moose in the U.P. Right Now
There is something special about seeing Michigan's largest animal in the wild. Locals in the Upper Peninsula share locations where to spot moose in the spring.
Michigan Moose Population Estimates as of 2025
One of my most memorable experiences traveling in Michigan was driving across the Upper Peninsula. After crossing the Mackinac Bridge and heading west on U.S. 2, I kept watching the roadside, and about three-quarters of the way across, I spotted a moose and her calf in a marsh. Seeing them in the wild was an incredible moment.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources worked with Ontario to reintroduce moose into the U.P. in the mid-80s with the hope of having a population of around 1,000 by the year 2000.
The goal was not met; however, as of January 2025, the western Upper Peninsula is estimated to have about 300 to 426 moose. The population has seen a slight decline, largely due to habitat changes, disease, and predation.

My best friend lives in Iron River and used to work near Marquette, often spotting moose on his nearly two-hour drive. Spring is a good time to see them, and some U.P. locals even share known areas where you might catch a glimpse of Michigan’s largest animal in the wild.
Where Moose Are Most Active in the U.P. Right Now
Recently on the Upper Peninsula Reddit, Yoopers sharred places where you can spot a moose during the spring. Below are some of the moose hotspots:
The majority of the mainland moose population resides in the western U.P., primarily across Marquette, Baraga, and Iron counties.
Areas near Ishpeming and Michigamme are often considered good places to spot moose, though sightings are far less predictable than deer. Patience is key, so it’s best to keep your camera ready and be prepared for a bit of luck.
Wolf Lake Road has often been a hotspot for seeing moose in the wilds of the U.P.
My friend has pointed out seeing many moose traveling between Iron Mountain and Ishpeming.
Both M96 and M35 have been hotspots for spotting moose in the U.P. There are a few more locations you can find here on the Reddit thread.

Good luck moose spotting this spring.
