Lots to See in The Sky in April Like Mercury, Pink Moon & More
If you like looking up into the night sky April is packed with all kinds of goodies like a chance to see Mercury, a Pink Moon, and a meteor shower.
Stargazing
I am not quite sure how getting a portable fire pit and watching the stars are related but ever since I got the portable fire pit, my son and I have been fixated on the sky.
Once it gets dark at my place after a fire pit. Our eyes move from the fire to the sky. My son and I love spotting shooting stars and meteor showers and looking for other things we may not be able to explain.
April Will Be a Great Month For Those Who Like to Look Into the Night Sky
My son is going to be pumped when he finds out he may get a look at planet Mercury, see a Pink Moon, and get a meteor shower in April. We have been spotting the constellations and getting pretty good at finding them regularly and we recently just got into finding the planets when they are close enough to see.
See Mercury in April
In the picture above, you can see Mercury and up close it kind of looks like the moon is filled with craters from meteors slamming into the planet.
To see Mercury you will have to focus on the sky in the West just after the sun goes down. Mercury will start low and move quickly as you get further into the night. Your best chance to see the planet will be April 3 - 11.
Pink Moon
You won't have much time to see the Pink Moon but according to MLive, April 4, 5, and 6 will be your best chance, and Wednesday, April 5 into the morning of Thursday, April 6 the Pink Moon will be in full.
Lyrid Meteor Shower
The whole back half of April should be electric as the Lyrid meteor shower will occur from April 15 through April 29. If you have an area you know of where there are no city skylines you will be in for a treat. The Lyrid usually provides about 10 to 15 meteors an hour and if you get really lucky you may even see fireballs. The Lyrid will peak on April 23. My son and I will be having some fire pits this month to keep us warm while we are looking into the sky.
