Human, animal, and even dinosaur bones have been discovered throughout Michigan. If you come across any bones, you should stop work immediately and avoid touching or disturbing them. If the remains appear to be human, or if you are unsure, you should contact local law enforcement right away.

If the bones are clearly from an animal, they can often be left in place, reburied, or collected for cleaning and identification. However, for certain species such as deer or other regulated game, a permit may be required, so it’s important to check with your local Michigan Department of Natural Resources office for guidance.

According to WOOD-TV, ancient human remains were discovered during an excavation project near Big Star Lake in Lake County. A crew working to lift a home for basement installation made the discovery when they uncovered human bones.

The local medical examiner’s office determined the remains were ancestral and transferred them to an anthropologist for further study. Examiners believe the skull and femur likely belonged to a Native American individual, though the age of the remains has not yet been determined.

If the anthropologist determines the bones are Native American, they will be given to the local tribes.
