Ladies Check Your Tampons For Toxic Metals
You would think tampon makers would make sure their products are free of toxic metals but over a dozen brands tested say otherwise.
Is Tampon Safety Being Overlooked by Companies Who Make the Products?
First, I will say that I know nothing about tampons other than women use them in one of the most sensitive areas of their bodies. With that being said, I would think that makers of tampons would be taking the ultimate precautions in making their products completely safe and free of toxic materials for women. It seems like a no-brainer.
A major American university has uncovered that very little research has been done to monitor the types of chemicals found in tampons. If this has me scratching my head I can only imagine how women may react to the idea of toxic chemicals being found in 14 different brands who make tampons.

Major University Discovers Toxic Metals Like Lead and Arsenic in Tampons
According to WOOD, the University of California, Berkeley, did a study of widely accessible brands of tampons to find out if chemicals would be found. Shockingly, 16 metals have been detected in 30 tampons across 14 brands.
Below is a list of metals discovered by researchers in tampons:
- Arsenic
- Barium
- Calcium
- Cadmium
- Cobalt
- Chromium
- Copper
- Iron
- Mercury
- Manganese
- Nickel
- Lead
- Selenium
- Strontium
- Vanadium
- Zinc
The highest concentrations of metals found were lead, arsenic, and cadmium. We've known for years that no type of lead is safe for humans, especially in tampons.
The research also uncovered that no matter the brand name or where the tampons were purchased, all categories had high levels of metals. The majority of women use tampons during their periods which means they are at a higher risk of exposure to arsenic and lead. It is too bad that Berkeley didn't release the brand names of these products. Ladies may want to reach out to companies for more clarity on the product brand they choose. More research will need to be done to on how the body deals with these metals.
