After Tonight, Grand Rapids Won’t See Another 9 P.M. Sunset Until Next Year

Summer days in West Michigan are spectacular (when we're not dealing with heat waves or excessive wildfire smoke). The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the days are long.

Quite long, in fact. In June, we see sunsets at nearly 9:30 p.m. In July, the days slowly start getting shorter, but we still have daylight until 9 p.m. or later.

That's all about to end, though. Our long summer nights continue to dwindle as we move closer to fall.

Grand Rapids' Last 9 P.M. Sunset Will Be on Monday, August 3, 2026

I knew that the days were getting shorter and the sunsets were happening earlier and earlier, but I didn't realize just how much earlier until this morning when I saw a Facebook post from FOX-17 Chief Meteorologist Kevin Craig.

According to Kevin, tonight, August 3, will be our final 9 p.m. or later sunset for the year.

What's Next: Fall in West Michigan

While it's sad to think about the fact that our days are getting shorter, it also gives us things to look forward to. Shorter days mean that fall is on the way. And fall in Michigan is spectacular in its own way. You see the leaves changing colors; you get apple cider donuts and corn mazes; the kids go back to school...
