Want a Different Mackinac Island Experience? Learn From the Locals
Whether you have been to Mackinac Island or not, you know of it if you've spent any time living in Michigan. Find out what Michiganders are saying about enjoying your time to the fullest on Mackinac Island.
Michigan's Mackinac Island
I was born and raised in Michigan, but have never been to Mackinac Island. I have driven by it several times, and never pulled in to spend a day. My mom loves it and has visited several times, and from the smile on her face when she tells the stories, it sounds like a great place.

Personally, if I have to be around other tourists, fudge, and shops, there better be roller coasters or a concert to keep me occupied. Everyone is different, which is why Michigan has a variety of places to visit. I like to say, you be you.
There are some vintage towns to visit in the U.P., but nothing really compares to the charm and history that you find on Mackinac Island. (Plus, no cars = no traffic!)

Is Mackinac Island Overrated?
I saw a thread on the Upper Peninsula Reddit page from a poster who asked if he was the only one who thought Mackinac Island was overrated. Most posters defended the historic island and offered suggestions for a better experience.
You're not likely to see everything that you want on a single day trip to the island.
And that seemed to be a theme for many in the thread.
I had a feeling Yoopers were not into Mackinac Island, but it seems I was wrong.

The island itself offers many great ways to enjoy the island and tips for your trip that you may not have thought of.
Some other great tips from Redditors include:
- "Just go before Memorial Day or after Labor Day, and it’s much better." - Ok-Entertainment5045
- "If you can swing it, we stayed overnight a couple times and it was such a better experience than a day trip." - DigitalGuru42
- "They know how to take care of their tourists. If you want peace, walk away from downtown, away from the tourist hotspots. There are plenty of quiet places." - ArtofJF
