Community Vision Brings Playground to Life

“This started with the local community imagining what a new playground could be,” said Dervin Figuereo, community engagement specialist for the Department of Parks and Recreation. “We’re thrilled to have partnered with neighbors to create a space that brings joy to children and families alike.”

The project began in July 2022, when the Midtown Neighborhood Association gathered input from neighbors about what they wanted in a playground. Jacqueline Scherer, the association’s board chair and founder of THE PLAYGROUNDgr, called the project “a dream come true” and a perfect example of what can happen when a community comes together.

A Playground Packed with Fun

Work began last week at the lot on Fountain Street and Houseman Avenue, replacing the old play space that had fallen into disrepair.

The playground features swings, a cyclone play structure, a sensory wave, tables, and even a space module and crawlway. Designed as a safe, inclusive space, families can enjoy it for years to come.

Volunteers Make It Happen

Sinclair Recreation led the community build days, guiding volunteers through the construction process. In just two days, they transformed the dirt lot into a fully functional playground, soon ready for kids and families to explore.

Funding and Support

The $300,000 project was funded through a mix of the City Parks Millage, local fundraising, grants, and support from organizations like the Wege Foundation and GameTime Playground. Project partners also included Katerberg VerHage Inc., OCBA Landscape Architects, and several local businesses.

When Does the New Park Open?

According to Wood TV 8, the playground is expected to officially open in mid-September. Renovations are also ongoing at Houseman Field next door, including a new track, turf, expanded parking, and improved locker rooms.
