Michigan Club Focused on Conservation Closes After 90-Years
For nearly 90-years, one conservation club has done more for hunters and anglers than any other, unfortunately, it has now been forced to close its doors and end its advocacy work.
Michigan United Conservation Clubs: Who They Are and What They Represent
The Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) is most known for being a powerful, decades-long advocate for Michigan sportsmen and sportswomen, focusing on protecting hunting, fishing, and trapping rights.
Founded in 1937, the Michigan United Conservation Clubs has been widely recognized as a leading statewide conservation organization, advocating for science-based wildlife management and supporting important habitat conservation initiatives.
The list of accomplishments after 90-years is too long to list but here are a few of the highlights:
- Legislative Advocacy: The Michigan United Conservation Clubs has played a key role in several major conservation achievements, including the passage of the Bottle Bill, the establishment of the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, and securing constitutional protection for the Trust Fund in Michigan.
- Protecting Rights: The organization worked to protect hunting rights and pass the Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.
- Media and Education: For decades, it published Michigan Out-of-Doors magazine and operated the Michigan Out-of-Doors Youth Camp.
- Habitat Improvement: Through its "On the Ground" program, it organized volunteers for habitat improvement projects on public land.

Sadly, the MUCC has decided to close its doors.
Historic Michigan Conservation Club Closes After 90 Years
According to reporting from MLive, the Michigan United Conservation Clubs has voted unanimously to shut down following years of declining membership and rising operational costs. The decision marks the close of a significant chapter for one of Michigan’s most influential grassroots conservation organizations.
It is unfortunate to see an organization with nearly a century of work defending hunting and fishing rights come to an end. There is hope that another group will emerge to carry forward the advocacy for sportsmen and sportswomen in the years ahead, but as of now there are no clear frontrunners.
