New Study Ranks Grand Rapids Michigan’s Best-Run City

More bragging rights for Grand Rapids! Though not a native Grand Rapidian, I've called the city home for more than 20 years, and it's always cool to see it get national recognition.

In addition to being crowned the "best beer city in America" multiple years running and being named a "city on the rise" by LinkedIn, Grand Rapids has once again been named the best-run city in Michigan by WalletHub.

It’s now held that top spot in the state for at least three straight years!

How WalletHub Measures City Performance

The personal finance website's annual study looked at 148 of the nation's largest cities and ranked them based on how effectively local governments use public funds. Rather than simply measuring quality of life, WalletHub compared the quality of services residents receive against how much their city spends to provide them.

Think of it this way: Which cities are getting the most bang for their buck?

Researchers evaluated 36 metrics across six major categories, including financial stability, education, health, safety, economy, and infrastructure. Those scores were then weighed against each city's budget to determine which municipalities are delivering the strongest results for residents.

Where Grand Rapids Ranks Nationally

Grand Rapids landed at No. 27 overall, making it the highest-ranked city in Michigan and the only one from the state to crack the top 30.

The city earned a “Quality of City Services” rank of 34 and a “Total Budget Per Capita” rank of 37.

The only other Michigan cities included in the study were Warren at No. 35, Flint at No. 133, and Detroit at No. 147 out of 148 cities analyzed.

What Helps Grand Rapids Rank So High

Locally, city officials point to ongoing investments in infrastructure, housing, and public safety as part of what helps Grand Rapids continue to perform well in national rankings.

“Being recognized again as one of America’s best-run cities is a testament to the people who show up every day committed to making Grand Rapids stronger,” Mayor David LaGrand said. “Our team works with purpose, and our community partners help us move forward together.”

Leaders say Grand Rapids also continues to focus on long-term financial planning and maintaining stable reserves while balancing inflation and shifting state and federal funding.

The Top Three Best Run Cities in America

This year’s top-ranked city in Walletbhub's 2026 Best and Worst Run Cities Report was Provo, Utah, followed by Nampa, Idaho, and Manchester, New Hampshire.
