Warning: Thousands of Michigan IDs Were Printed Wrong

A Michigan enhanced driver’s license or state ID is important for residents who rely on these documents. However, more than 8,000 were recently mailed with printing errors, making them unusable.

What is an Enhanced Michigan Driver's License?

An enhanced Michigan driver’s license is a special form of identification that also serves as a border-crossing document and meets REAL ID requirements. It applies to certain land and sea travel to travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

The enhanced driver’s license also meets federal standards for domestic flights and entry into secure federal buildings. In addition to the U.S. flag icon on the front, the license contains a secure Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip that helps speed up processing at border crossings.

An enhanced driver’s license serves as both a driver’s license and a passport for certain types of travel. However, you’ll still need a passport for international air travel and for land or sea travel outside Canada, Mexico, and certain Caribbean destinations.

Michigan Residents Warned About Misprinted IDs

WXYZ reported that more than 8,200 Michigan residents received misprinted enhanced driver’s licenses and state IDs. The IDs were printed on August 26, 2026, and mailed with a stock photo and an incorrect date of birth in the lower-right corner instead of the resident’s information.

The Secretary of State’s Office is sending replacement IDs to residents who received misprinted licenses free of charge. Existing licenses and IDs that have not expired remain valid for travel.
