West Michigan School Gets Hammock Garden—Should More Follow Suit?
Hammock groves have been popping up at parks around Grand Rapids lately. They look like the perfect way to kick back and enjoy nature—but it turns out, they’re not just for fun!
Lowell Area Schools recently shared that Murray Lake Elementary has a new hammock garden. Judging by the photos, the students are loving it.
But this isn’t just about giving kids a cozy spot to chill. Research shows that learning outdoors can boost test scores, improve focus, and support overall well-being. The district shared:
"When kids read outdoors, their brains work differently. Being outside lowers heart rate, blood pressure, and stress hormones while improving memory and learning. The natural environment stimulates multiple senses, leading to better retention and deeper understanding compared to indoor settings."

Essentially, taking lessons outside can turn passive learning into active, hands-on experiences. It helps students think critically, adapt to new challenges, and build stronger connections with teachers—all while supporting mental and physical well-being.

Honestly, I think it’s a brilliant idea. When I was in school, our time outside was mostly just recess or the occasional field day. Having lessons outdoors more often would have been such a boost—for focus, mood, and learning.
