There aren't many things more magical than waking up to a fresh layer of snow on Christmas morning, or opening presents with snow falling outside. It is the icing on the cinnamon roll when you can have everything that makes December great all taking place on one of the most exciting days of the year.

However, Michigan's winters have been anything but normal in the last couple of years. One year we'd have a blizzard on Christmas while another there wouldn't be any snow on the ground. So, what are the odds we have a "white Christmas" this year?

Looking ahead at the current 10-day forecast from The Weather Channel (which is of course prone to change), no snow is predicted anytime next week. Wednesday the 25th has a High of 41°F and a low of 37°F.

However, we all know that predicting the weather is nothing more than an educated guess, so there is another metric to check out.

White Christmas Averages

The National Weather Service (NWS) has created a map showing the probability of there being at least 1 inch of snow on December 25th, using data from 1991-2020. Currently, Grand Rapids is sitting at an unconvincing 56%, so that isn't too reassuring either. Around the state, the odds aren't looking much better unless you're up North.

With all this being said, we could still wake up to a blizzard out of nowhere. Only Santa Claus and Jack Frost will know and they sadly did not respond to my messages.
