No Minimum Age Limit To Get Married In Michigan

Growing up in Michigan, I always thought that the adult things minus drinking began at 18. Things like joining the armed services, voting, paying taxes, and getting married.

Technically the minimum age limit to marry is zero in the state of Michigan and that is ridiculous. There is a 125-year-old law that allows parents to come to court to get permission to marry off their young children. Sorry but that is just sick and the law needs to be changes.

When I got older and used to read the rock magazines I learned Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page had a 14-year-old girlfriend named Lori Mattox. Billy Wyman of the Rolling Stones dated a 14-year-old named Mandy Smith he later married when she turned 18 but he was in his 40s at the time. Aerosmiths Steven Tyler convinced the parents of 16-year-old Julie Holcomb to sign her over to him at her legal guardian so he could take her on the road with him when he was 24. Much closer to home was when I found out Ted Nugent got the parents of 17-year-old Pele Massa to make him her legal guardian so he could take her across state lines.

Michigan Lawmakers Looking to Finally Ban Child Marriage

It looks like lawmakers in Michigan are finally trying to do the right thing and make 18 the legal age to get married. This would mean no one under 18 can get married or get written consent from a parent or legal guardian to get a judges permission either.

According to FOX 17, Michigan's Senate passed a bill to end child marriage and now the Senate and House are going over the bill before sending it off for Governor Gretchen Witmers signature.
