Michigan State Police Officer Receives National Honor After Saving Man From Burning Car
What does it mean to be a hero? It's a question with a wide range of answers. The phrase "not all heroes wear capes" is incredibly accurate. Sometimes a hero is someone who, as we'll get into, pulls a man from a burning car. Othertimes it could be a doctor working overtime, or a single mom making sacrifices to raise a kid on her own.

As it turns out, there is a special committee that honors and respects people who are "heroes" for their incredible actions. It's known as the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, originally started by industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie back in the early 1900s.

Each year, the committee highlights several civilians across the US and Canada who "voluntarily risk death or serious physical injury to save or attempt to save the life of another person". This year, Michigan State Police officer David Cardenas was one of 18 people recognized for his life-saving actions while off duty.
David Cardenas Saves a Man from a Burning Car
Off-duty state police sergeant David Cardenas, 49, pulled a 21-year-old man from a burning car near Holland, Michigan, on June 27, 2025, after a medical emergency caused a crash. Cardenas broke windows, cut the seat belt, and braved smoke and flames to free the trapped, unresponsive man before help arrived to drag him clear just before the car was destroyed.

The man suffered severe burns requiring six weeks of hospitalization, while Cardenas escaped with only minor burns and cuts.
What This Award Means For Cardenas
Being recognized by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission is more than just a medal. Getting recognized also makes you eligible for "financial considerations," such as a one-time grant, scholarship aid, death benefits, and more.
Other winners in this class are being rescued from an alligator's mouth, being saved from drowning, and more.
