VIDEO: Detroit Lions Legend Finally Gets Ford Field Honors
When Transformers came out in theaters in 2007 and took the box office by storm, I was obsessed. My siblings and I bought the movie soundtrack and were blasting "What I've Done" by Linkin Park. Pun fully intended, it was a transformative period in my life.
So in 2008 when the Detroit Lions drafted future Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson Jr. and he had the nickname "Megatron", he instantly had a special place in my heart. It wasn't just me either. His impact on the franchise in a relatively short career has earned him a permanent place among the "Pride of the Lions" at Ford Field, home of the Lions.
Pride of the Lions
Since 2009, 20 former Lions greats including Barry Sanders and Herman Moore have been added to the "Pride of the Lions", a Hall of Fame-esc area of Ford Field that features inductee's names, jersey numbers, and years played in Detroit. Lions CEO Mike Disner revealed Johnson would become part of this elite circle during Calvin Johnson's charity golf tournament.
When will this happen?
Johnson will be inducted during the Lions' Homecoming game on September 30th on Monday Night Football against the Seahawks. No player is more deserving of this honor than Calvin Johnson, who currently holds the NFL's single-season receiving yards record, and holds franchise records for receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches. He is the first inductee since 2023 when Lomas Brown was honored.
