In most of Michigan's small towns, there is usually a mom-and-pop restaurant where the locals gather each day, with the occasional visit of a passerby.

I live in the small town of White Cloud, Michigan.

There is a little restaurant just on the outskirts of White Cloud called the North Star Cafe. They specialize in breakfast but also offer great lunch and dinner selections but are only open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Sunday. This is a favorite of my son and me and you probably have something similar in your small town, but there can only be one that is named best in the state of Michigan.

There are lots of places Michiganders call hole-in-the-wall restaurants all across the state but there is only one that can be called Michigan's best. Before we get to Michigan's best, what is considered a hole-in-the-wall restaurant and how is the best determined?

A hole-in-the-wall restaurant is one that is usually not attractive from the outside, not fancy on the inside, usually inexpensive, but usually offers some of the best food around.

A website by the name of Cheapism compiles reviews from Yelp and TripAdvisor along with recommendations and rankings from local food experts to put their list together.

According to Cheapism, Michigan's best hole-in-the-wall breakfast comes from Walt's Restaurant in Caseville and this looks like a fine place to get a great meal and a great conversation.  Walt's has been serving the locals for over 50 years and is well known for their homestyle cooking using real potatoes, and some of the finest homemade breads. Make sure and grab a cinnamon roll before you head out, you won't regret it at all.
