When I was a kid growing up in Michigan, I would often ask my mom, "Do we have any pop?" when asking for a Pepsi or a Coke. She sometimes would say, "It's too late to be drinking pop right now you have to go to school tomorrow."

My parents were originally from down south and when we would visit family, some would refer to soda as pop while others would say Coke even if they were talking about a Pepsi or 7-Up.

Not long after graduating from high school, I was in a band that started a tour in New York. We stopped just outside New York City to grab a bite to eat and I will never forget when the waitress asked me what kind of soda I wanted. I responded, "I'd rather have a pop, what kind of pop do you have?"  The waitress then said, you must be from the mid-west, we call it soda in New York. As you can see from this Facebook thread, I'm not the only one who noticed soda was called something different depending on where you live. My favorite post on this thread was the one from Kayla Lair that said, "I've always called it soda. I grew up in CA and visited my grandma from WI when I must have been around 7. She asked if I wanted a POP and I thought she was gonna hit me."
