Motorhead's iconic frontman Lemmy Kilmister was the guest on Full Metal Jackie's weekend radio show. Lemmy discussed the upcoming Motorhead Motorboat Cruise, the band's new album and his lifestyle changes over the last couple of years. Check out the chat below:

How are you, my friend?

Hello boys and girls, hello this is your uncle speaking.

[laughs] How ya doing?

I'm alright, getting through it.

Feeling good?

Yeah, in the studio right now.

Oh yeah, how's it going working on the new record?

Pretty good, actually. I've got writer's block. It'll be a couple of days. You get that now and again.

I've always wondered what you do when something like that happens.

You wait for it to go away. It always does. That song you thought was impossible yesterday will come to you.

So you just take a break and then you come back to you.

Yeah. Very often you can run through other songs for a bit and then come back and that will do.

Really excited you guys are working on new music and also excited about this year's Motorhead Motorboat Cruise. What a killer lineup! Lemmy, what was memorable about last year's Motorboat Cruise to you that you're looking forward to again later this year.

I think the great thing about it was I got the oldest cabin [laughs]. It was very nice. It was loads of portholes. Good to me. It was great, everybody was really careful. Five days and no violence with all those people. It's pretty good.

This year, it's going to be another amazing cruise. You've got Slayer, Motorhead, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Hatebreed, Exodus and so many more. You've also been recording a new Motorhead disc. Were the new songs mostly written and arranged before recording? Or have you been writing in the studio?

No, we've been writing in the studio as usual. We don't have a plan, Motorhead, we never did. That's the great secret of our survival, I think. We don't make plans.

Well it seems to work for you guys.

Yeah, really.

You've made some lifestyle changes over the last couple of years. How difficult of an adjustment was it at first to do that?

I stopped smoking about two years but I started smoking again but I'm only doing a pack a week as opposed to two packs a day, which I was doing. I stopped drinking Coca Cola. I haven't had a coke in two years because I think they're evil. Ten spoons of sugar in a can of Coke and I've got diabetes.

Was it hard to give up drinking Coca Cola since you were so into it?

Oh, I drink vodka and orange now. It's very much less.

Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee have always been really good players, but how have their skills evolved over the years?

Well, Phil is a natural guitar player. When he first picked one up, I'm sure he could tune it before he put it down again. Mikkey is the same, he's a natural drummer. You couldn't play like that if you weren't natural. You can't learn what Mikkey does; Mikkey is incredible.

What do you think is timeless about the way they can play?

Mikkey is influenced a lot by hair metal. He likes all that stuff. Me and Phil are very diverse. I like ABBA, Evanescence and MC5 and Motorhead. He likes Michael Schenker and Todd Rundgren, he's really odd. But then, I'm really odd, too. So it works. Thirty years now, 40th anniversary of Motorhead this year.

Lemmy, there's a saying that if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life. From your perspective, what's true about that?

It's true about me, I don't know about you, you're still working aren't you?

[Laughs]

I'll never work another day in my life because I don't consider music work, really. It's like an extended hobby. It's my life, in fact. I don't have a life outside of Motorhead. You stop being Full Metal Jackie whenever you want to, right? You go in the house. I never stop being Lemmy, 24/7.

Motorhead has brought immense happiness and joy to a lot of people to all parts of the world. Beyond simply being entertainment, do you allow yourself the satisfaction knowing you've done something that has had such a positive effect on people's lives?

Well, when we brought a kid out of a coma once when Eddie and Phil were in the band. We made a tape and they played it to him in the hospital and he came out of his coma. We made about ten of them and he was the only one that ever came out. Just that is worth my whole career, right?

What do you think fans overlook most about Motorhead's music?

That we have brains. [laughs]

I don't think we overlook that.

People think we're gorillas with leather jackets on.

[laughs] I don't think that's true.

Believe me, it used to be true. I don't know if it's true now. I'm sure it is in some states.

Lem, thank you so much for taking the time to be on the show. I'm always so honored to get a chance to talk.

It was a pleasure, Jackie.
