Machine Head’s Robb Flynn Reveals Details on New Album
Machine Head are making strides toward a new album, but as frontman Robb Flynn reveals in a new “General’s Journals” posting, things are moving forward at a “slow and steady” pace. However, the progress is coming along well enough for Flynn to divulge the current titles of a few songs that may make the next disc.
He explains, “I’ve been slammed recording guitars, laying down vocals and working on some killer packaging ideas with the Nuclear Blast crew.” But busy is a good thing and Flynn now has some material to talk about.
The frontman states, “Less than a week before we got into JingleTown we finished a pair of songs, one of which was literally not even an idea the week previous. Phil [Demmel] brought in some great, GREAT stuff at the 11th hour and we were able to turn it into a really cool song with the working title of: ‘Sharkbite Days Revisited.'”
He also opened up about the saga of a track once called ‘Blazing Saddles,’ which just undertook a major overhaul. Flynn states, “[It] just wasn’t working. Even though it had some cool parts it was just too god damned hard to play and make it sound natural, so we back-burnered it for a while. It was the type of song where we finally realized our mortality, LOL! One of those ‘Dammit, I can’t play this fast at my age anymore’ kind of moments!”
But not being ones to give up on a good idea, the rocker reveals that they were able to re-work the material. “On the second to last day of rehearsals [Dave] McClain and I deconstructed ‘Blazing Saddles,’ and then reconstructed it into a far simpler structure, and its f—in rockin,” says Flynn. “[It’s] less of a Slayer/Slipknot vibe, and more of a ‘Screaming for Vengeance’-era Judas Priest feel to it. Appropriately, it has now been given the working title: ‘Simmering Saddles.'”
Though not all titles are set in stone, fans with a sharp eye can catch a number of working titles for tracks on the photo of the whiteboard that accompanies Flynn’s update. Some of the songs include ‘Riffnado,’ ‘Sail Into the Black,’ ‘Eyes of the Dead’ and ‘Killers and Kings.’ The photo was also posted to demonstrate Flynn’s point that “there’s some blood on the board there,” which means progress is being made.
