At the proverbial 11th hour of the MLB’s waiver trade deadline the Detroit Tigers had one more move to make.

The Tigers literally near the stroke of midnight not only secured the deal to send Verlander to the Astros but got the pitcher to agree to it. There were rumors leading up to the deadline that Verlander had vetoed a trade with his 10-and-5 rights.

The Tigers acquired a handful of prospects from the Houston Astros, who are considered a top-5 minor league organization by Baseball America. Coming to the Detroit system are RHP Franklin Perez, OF Daz Cameron and C Jake Rogers. They are ranked, third, ninth and eleventh respectively in the Astros organization by MLB Pipeline.

Perez is considered the #46 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline giving Detroit their fifth top 100 prospect in their system. Splitting his time this season with A-Advanced Buies Creek and AA Corpus Christi, Perez is sporting a 3.02 ERA in 16 starts between the two teams. He has appeared in three games this season that he did not start and registered a save in each of those appearances. Perez has a 2.89 K/BB ratio this season and has only given up six home runs in over 85 innings of work. Both his fastball and his curveball are listed at 60 on the 20-80 MLB scouting scale. He is Detroit’s new number one prospect.

Daz Cameron is the son of former MLB outfielder Mike Cameron and had all they hype of being a top pick in the 2015 draft. Concerns he would not sign with a major league team out of high school dropped him all the way to the competitive balance rounds at pick #37 that year. Still, Cameron has shown the talent that justified that hype as a son of a major leaguer. This season with A Quad Cities he is hitting .271 with 14 home runs, 73 RBIs, and 32 stolen bases in 120 games. He’s trending upwards too. Since July 1, Cameron is slashing .345/.420/.550 with six home runs and 40 RBIs in that stretch.

Rogers is one of the top 10 catchers in the minor leagues according to MLB Pipeline and is developing fast in the Astros system. A third round pick in 2016 out of the University of Tulane, Rogers earned himself a promotion from Quad Cities to Buies Creek thanks in part to his .520 slugging percentage and .856 OPS in just 27 Midwest League games. With Buies Creek, his average went up 10 points (to .265) and he’s stolen 13 bases out of 21 attempts (~62% success rate). His scouting report on MLB Pipeline grades him at 65 (on a 20-80 scale) for both his arm and his fielding abilities so on top of the offensive power he is showing, he’s great defensively too.

These prospects add in to Detroit’s system alongside Grayson Long who was acquired in a deal with the Angels for Justin Upton earlier on waiver deadline day.
