The U.S. National Forest Service is hiring in Michigan

The Huron-Manistee National Forests is looking to hire eight permanent seasonal wildlife technician positions.

The nearly one-million-acre Huron-Manistee National Forests lie between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the northern Lower Peninsula.

There are eight open positions, two at each of the following locations:

  • Baldwin, Mich.
  • Mio, Mich.
  • Oscoda, Mich.
  • Wellston, Mich.

Job Duties of U.S. Forest Service Wildlife Techs

  • Collect wildlife data for inclusion in wildlife reports.
  • Perform habitat sampling and analyze samples.
  • Recognize and assess condition of environment and wildlife inhabitants.
  • Complete habitat improvement project work such as watershed development, fencing, or clearing.

What is the Pay?

According to the U.S. Forest Service,

These are 18/8 positions, with 18 pay periods (36 weeks) in paid status, and 8 pay periods (16 weeks) in non-pay status each year. These are being hired at the GS-5 pay grade ($17/31/hour), with a target grade of GS-6, meaning the individual may be promoted to GS-6 ($19.29/hour) after 1 year of successful performance. These positions are eligible for federal employee benefits, including retirement contribution and health insurance.

What are the Requirements?

If you're interested in the position, you must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 in the Federal service, or:

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school from an accredited college or university with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.

Or:

  •  Combination of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience.
