Law May Let Michigan Workers Log Off Fully

Most people head home when the workday ends, but some Michigan employees are still expected to answer calls, emails, or texts after they're off the clock. The proposed Workplace Boundaries Act could change that.

Michigan defines workplace boundaries through wage laws, paid sick leave requirements, and strong anti-discrimination protections. Beyond that, how those boundaries are applied varies widely depending on the size and type of employer.

Workplace boundaries in Michigan don’t refer to fences, security systems, or locks on an employer’s doors to keep out intruders. Instead, they relate to expectations around communication after hours, and currently, Michigan labor laws do not include a legally mandated “right to disconnect” from work-related messages outside working hours.

Michigan's Proposed Employee Boundaries Rules Explained

According to WWMT TV3, a workplace boundaries bill is advancing through the Michigan Legislature that would prohibit employers from requiring employees to respond to work-related communications outside of normal working hours. The proposal would also bar employers from penalizing workers who do not respond.

The goal of the bill is to help workers maintain a healthier work-life balance by allowing them to fully unplug when they’re off the clock. It would not apply in cases of declared emergencies or company-wide alerts.

Some concerns have been raised that the bill may need additional industry-specific exceptions, such as restaurants, where shifts occasionally need to be covered on short notice. While that may come down to common sense in practice, it also suggests there is still more work to be done before the proposal can move forward.
