No, it's not for being the coldest on Opening Day, although I'm sure we're near the top of that, too.

Finance Buzz Studied The Spending Habits Of Major League Fans

As someone whose Dad used to bring his own beer to Tigers games in the '60s, this statistic doesn't surprise me at all.

The web site Finance Buzz released their findings on what fans spend their money on when in the ball park, and they found out that Tiger fans spend not only the least of any other fans in Major League baseball at concession stands in general, they also spend the least on beer.

Yup! Just like my dad, Tigers fans refuse to pay exorbitant prices for beverages, averaging spending only $15 per fan on alcohol per visit to Comerica Park. Overall, Tiger fans spend only $52 total while at the ball park. (My Dad never bought me a batting helmet either, but he would take me to Free Bat Day, which is no longer a thing for obvious reasons.)

Not Only Are Tiger Fans Cheap When It Comes To Beer They're REAL Cheap

According to Finance Buzz, Tiger fans spent ten dollars less than the entire league average on beer.

Detroit fans average just $15.00 per game buying adult beverages, making them one of four fan bases who spend at least $10 less than the league average in that regard.

The reason may be that Comerica charges $9.25 for a 16-ounce domestic beer. Which means that the average fan only has a beer and half during a game.

So why does it seem like there are a lot of drunk people at Tiger games? Well, they probably load up on alcohol at cheaper prices outside the stadium, where you can get cans of beer for as little as $3 if you look around.

Which Brings Me To My Story...

A few years back management here at the radio station thought it would be a nice reward to give all of us the day off and treat us to a Tigers game. A bus was rented and loaded with beer and liquor and off we went to an afternoon game.

Once in Detroit, unnamed former managers led us to a nearby bar for some pre-game drinks. We never made it to the game.

The crew got so drunk at the bar, we never even went to the game, and instead, we got back on the bus and went back to Grand Rapids drunker, but having never saw a game.

It was the weirdest road trip I've ever been on.
