This is Michigan’s Most Popular Quarantine Cocktail?
Apparently a big quarantine time activity in the U.S. is... boozing.
Alcohol sales have skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic as we are staying home. Newsweek reports that one week in late March, sales on alcoholic beverages spiked by 55 percent. According to Nielsen Market Research Firm:
Hard liquors, including tequila and gin, as well as cocktails are the favorites among consumers. Sprits sales increased by 75 percent compared to the same dates in 2019. Beer is the next most popular drink, with purchases up by 66 percent, then wine, up 42 percent year-on-year.
So what are we sipping on here in Michigan? According to BroBible, Google recently released search data on what cocktail recipes each states are seaching for the most in the last 30 days.
And here in the Mitten State it is...
The Cosmopolitan.
Is it 1999? Do we need to fight over who is the Carrie/ Charlotte/ Samantha/ Miranda from Sex And The City?
That said... I'd still totally sip on a Cosmo. They're pink! And delicious!
So since we're searching for it anyway, here's a super simple Cosmopolitan recipe from The Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten, of the Food Network:
- 1 cup vodka
- 1/2 cup triple sec
- 1/2 cup cranberry juice
- 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and pour through a strainer into four martini glasses... or one big glass. Which Ina actually did last month and shared the video on Instagram.

Other interesting things I found in the BroBible article (check out the full Uniquely Searched Cocktails by State Map here):
The cocktail recipes that seem to be the most popular across the U.S. are Old Fashioned, Manhattan, and Margarita.
Also, did that many people in Missouri really need to Google what's in a Gin and Tonic? Um... it's uh... gin and tonic.
