
100 Years Strong: The Story Of Suicide Ski Jumping Hill
Did you know Michigan has a ski hill called Suicide Hill Ski Jump? Since 1925, hundreds of Olympic ski jumpers have trained there. Suicide Hill is celebrating 100 years with a huge competition.
Suicide Hill Ski Jump
In the late 1800s, Nordic immigrants migrated to the Upper Peninsula and brought their skis to the Marquette Iron Range and formed the Norden Ski Club. The club hosted its first tournament in 1888. Ishpeming became the birthplace of organized skiing in the United States.
The Ishpeming Ski Club (ISC) needed a big jump, so in 1925 the City of Ishpeming leased some land where Suicide Hill was created. Several other jumps were created for different levels of difficulty, and the training of local ski jumpers all the way to those going to the Olympics.
Through world wars, depressions, and pandemics, the Ishpeming Ski Club has never missed their annual ski jumping tournament.

Celebrating 100 Years of Ski Jumping at Suicide Ski Hill
The ISC is holding its 139th annual ski jumping tournament January 16th - 18th. This will also be the celebration of 100 years of the event being at Suicide Hill. This is Michigan's longest running winter event in the state's history.
On Friday, January 16, there will be a U.S. Cup competition. Saturday, January 17, will feature cross-country ski race, more ski jumping tournaments and so much more. Sunday, January 18, will feature more ski racing and a series of ski jumping tournaments on multiple hills.
There is more than just ski jumping with tailgating & bonfires, concessions & beer tent, plus a fireworks show that will light up the sky over Suicide Hill.
