Do Developers Eye Sparta For New AI Data Center Project?
AI data centers are popping up all over the country, but so are the electric bills for those who live near them. Could Sparta, Michigan, be the next location for a data center?
What is an AI Data Center?
There have been data centers built for big companies in Michigan for years, but the amount of processing needed for AI requires much larger systems, which need to be spread out due to the amount of electricity used to operate them.
For those unfamiliar with the concept, a data center is a dedicated physical facility housing an organization's critical IT infrastructure. This type of center houses servers, storage, and networking gear, to store, process, and distribute vast amounts of data, powering everything from streaming, and online learning to cloud services, and AI.

These secure data centers feature robust power, cooling, and fire suppression systems, which means they use a lot of power and could cause a community's electric bills to rise.
Is An AI Data Center Coming To Sparta?
The village of Sparta's planning commission, recently had a meeting to discuss the possibility of a data center moving into the area in the future, which had the community riled up with concerns.
According to WOOD, the planning commission wasn't voting in a data center, just amending language surrounding the idea of a data center in case one is proposed in the future. It is smart for the board to be forward thinking since many of these data centers get built in rural communities.

Amending the language of the ordinance would give Sparta more leverage if a data center is proposed. So, at this time there is not a data center moving to Sparta, but if the conversation comes up, the planning commission is ready. Until then, there will be more talks with the community to help with any concerns in case the opportunity arises.
