Lovefood.com sought to find the most legendary sandwiches invented in each state based on reviews, awards, and the genuine experiences of their team. And wow, some states are quite plentiful in that department!

Massachusetts, for example, is home to all these handhelds:

The ham sandwich! While you can get a ham sandwich at delis and restaurants across the country, there's something special about Detroit's version.

It's got super thick slabs of house-baked ham, a soft white roll, pickles and yellow mustard. It all started when Honey Baked Ham first opened in Detroit in 1957. It grew to become a cheap and filling favorite for Detroit's blue collar workers. Lovefood shouts out the ham sandwiches at Mike's Famous Ham.

Another Michigan sandwich to make the cut is cudighi. I'll be honest I'd never heard of it before... but that's probably because I'm not a Yooper!

It's a specialty in the Upper Peninsula. Cudighi is an Italian sausage that's spicy and sweet, with spices like nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon. While the cudighi sandwich may have originated in Northern Italy, Italian-Americans in the U.P. began selling it in 1936 according to Travel Marquette. It's pretty much the only place you can find it now.

According to Lovefood, you'll find the best cudighi at the Ambassador restaurant in downtown Houghton.
