One Michigan Eatery Makes Esquire’s Exclusive List of Best New Restaurants

Each year Esquire magazine editors travel across the country, seeking out the top new restaurants.

Of the 35 new eateries selected this year, one Michigan restaurant has made Esquire's exclusive list of the "Best New Restaurants of 2024."

The authors say their picks for this year "nudged us to think in a new way about the weaving, wandering course of 'American food.'"

Whether you are looking to splurge, eat on the cheap, have a romantic date night, or a fun time out with friends, Esquire claims the restaurants on their list "check every box."

The Michigan dining destination to make Esquire's list of the best new restaurants of 2024 is Vecino in Detroit. 

Spanish for neighbor, Vecino opened at 4100 3rd Ave. in April. The stylish restaurant serves fresh, modern Mexican food and cocktails.

Esquire says Vecino brings the modern taste of Mexico City to the Motor City.

On the menu you'll find handmade tortillas, Tiger Prawns, Tostadas, Enchiladas, whole fish dishes, and more.

In particular, Esquire praises Vecino's blue-corn sope topped with crispy chunks of pork belly, quesadilla laced with herbaceous epazote and meaty maitake mushrooms, and  butterflied fish with green and red salsas.

The drink menu includes creative cocktails and wine.

This is not the first honor for Vecino. It's also made "best new restaurants" lists from Eater Detroit and Hour Detroit.

The Detroit Free Press has called Vecino "the most underrated restaurant in Detroit."
