We don't hear enough about the good things that police officers do in Michigan, but today we would like to recognize an off-duty officer who stepped up to save a skier's life.

With cellphones, social media, the occasional bad apple or a tough decision during a difficult situation, it's easy for people to look toward law enforcement in a negative way. Unfortunately, this doesn't represent the vast mass majority of law enforcement officers in Michigan who are stand-up individuals on the job, and in their communities.

Today, let’s highlight the many positive contributions of Michigan State Police troopers, from leading gun violence intervention efforts through programs like SCIP, to organizing large-scale holiday initiatives such as Shop with a Cop and Operation Good Cheer. Troopers also mentor at-risk youth through STOP (State Troopers of Police), provide vital community support including food and school supplies, create specialized outreach for migrant communities, and carry out heroic rescues, all while serving as strong role models and building meaningful community connections.

I am just scratching the surface about the great things our men and women of the Michigan State Police do on and off the job. Once MSP officer recently helped save a skier's life while he was off-duty.

Just like any Michigander, when an officer is off work, they are out in the community living life. One MSP trooper happened to be enjoying some skiing at Nub's Nob Ski Resort.

According to the MSP Eight District X page, the St. Ignace Post is honoring Sergeant Dennis Wagner for his help in saving the life of a skier while he was off duty.

Wagner was doing some cross-country skiing when he noticed a skier collapsed on the ground. He worked with a ski patroller on rolling the subject over to open the man's airway, and began initiating chest compressions. Nub's Nob Ski Patrol arrived at the scene with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This combined with CPR helped the subject regain a pulse and begin breathing.

The injured skier would not be here today if it were not for the quick thinking and efforts by Wagner and ski patrol. The injured skier is expected to make a full recovery.
