The first measles case was detected in Muskegon County in late June, and now health officials have confirmed a second case. The exposure site has been identified.

Measles is one of the most contagious viral diseases, spreading easily through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Measles can infect up to 90% of people who are not immune who come in contact with an infected person.

Measles starts with flu-like symptoms. Many get a fever, cough, and red eyes, followed by a rash that spreads from the face down the body. The virus can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, diarrhea, and a dangerous brain infection called encephalitis, which can lead to permanent damage or death.

Measles can also suppress the immune system, leaving the person vulnerable to other infections, and in rare cases, it can lead to a fatal degenerative brain disease years later called SSPE.

According to FOX 17, anyone who visited Trinity Health Urgent Care on Sherman Boulevard in Muskegon on October 2, between 3:45 and 7 p.m., may have been exposed to the measles virus.  Health officials are urging those who were at the health care facility during that time frame to monitor themselves for symptoms now through October 23. If you experience symptoms, health officials advise staying at home, alerting your doctor before seeking care, and avoiding the risk of further spreading the virus.

FOX 17 reported that Health Officer Kathy Moore said, "With record measles cases nationwide, and declining vaccination rates, more people are at risk."
