There are 8 states in the United States that typically get the most snowfall each season. Those states are Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Colorado, Alaska, Michigan, New York, and Massachusetts.
From that list of states, it’s easy to see where America’s best ski resorts are. All that snow is a dream for skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers, but a nightmare for locals who have to keep up with snow removal.
According to Turf Magazine, these are the average totals for the top 8 U.S. States for snowfall:
- Vermont - 89.2 inches
- Maine - 77.3 inches
- New Hampshire - 71.4 inches
- Colorado - 67.3 inches
- Alaska - 64.5 inches
- Michigan - 60.7 inches
- New York - 55.3 inches
- Massachusetts - 51 inches

More Snow Than Alaska? U.P. Towns Make The Case
Yooper Steve recently made a Facebook post for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan going over how much snow Calumet and Tamarack has received so far this winter season. You get a pretty good idea of just how deep the snow is by how deep the trench Yooper Steve is standing in.
As of January 26, 2026, Calumet and Tamarack have recorded 193.8 inches of snowfall, more than 16 feet so far this season, and winter is far from over. The green flag on the pole marks how deep the snow would be if all of it had fallen at once.
