Lovefood.com sought to find the best independent bakeries in each state based on awards, reviews, and the genuine experiences of their team.
The foodie publication's pick for the top bakery in Michigan is Sister Pie in Detroit.
This is not the bakery's first honor! It was also recently named one of the 12 must-try bakeries in the U.S.
Back in 2012, owner Lisa Ludwinski began baking and selling pies out of her parent's Milford kitchen. As business grew, she moved into a shared commercial kitchen, and eventually into the spot at 8066 Kercheval St. in Detroit. The name Sister Pie comes from a term of endearment that Lisa and her younger sister, Sarah, share for each other.
According to Sister Pie's website,
The concept then grew to be inspired by an image of women (sisters, mothers, grandmothers, friends) gathering around a kitchen counter, pitting cherries, and rolling out pie dough.
The bakery serves up both sweet and savory seasonally-driven pies, cookies, and other treats.
Lovefood compliments Sister Pie's flaky, buttery pie crusts and unique fillings such as salted maple, brown butter plum crumble, and stone fruit cardamom
