How Meknology Cuts Disposal Costs And Creates New Income
Any time industrial waste can be repurposed to improve the environment while generating profit, it’s a win for the businesses involved and the community.
A startup seeking ways to help address the Flint water crisis discovered that local municipalities were hesitant to trust private companies to manage the city’s water supply. However, during its efforts, the company identified an opportunity to support another industry that operates in nearly every city across Michigan.
What is Meknology?
You won’t find “Meknology” in any textbook; it’s the name of a startup company. The word “Mek” means “to make,” translates roughly to ‘make technology.” It’s a fitting name for a Michigan-based startup focused on innovation and tech development.

Craft Breweries Save Big And Earn Big With Meknology Tech
Craft breweries and distilleries use large amounts of water and ingredients to produce their beverages, but what happens to the waste? While some of it ends up at wastewater treatment plants, Meknology’s software has enabled several Michigan craft breweries and distilleries to turn their waste into profit.
According to MLive, Daniel Hodges, a South Haven, Michigan native and Michigan State University graduate, leveraged his expertise to launch a new startup called Meknology.
Hodges developed software that enables craft breweries and distilleries to transform their wastewater into upcycled products that can be sold. The waste left behind from grains can be sold for animal feed. The software also purifies water, while the extracted particulates can be repurposed as fertilizer for farms, fuel for the biodiesel industry, or feed for cattle, hogs, and chickens.

Hodges has created systems for businesses in the village of Central Lake, Detroit, and Ann Arbor. He has set up his company headquarters in Kalamazoo, and with 12,000 brewers and distillers in the U.S., Hodges hopes to connect 4,000 of them with Meknology.
