Man Shot in Head on Southeast Grand Rapids Sidewalk
GRPD are investigating following a shooting on the city's southeast side late Friday afternoon.
Fox 17 reports that the incident occurred on a sidewalk near Franklin Street and Eastern Avenue around 5p.m.
According to police, witnesses say one man was shot once in the head and a nearby vehicle was struck by bullets. Up to ten shots were fired.
Police report that the bullet grazed the victim's head, who was taken to Mercy Health St. Mary’s Hospital and is going to be OK.
It's believed the the shooting may be tied to an alleged $20 drug debt.
Sergeant John Wittkowski told Fox 17,
“The individuals who approached him wanted their money. At that point, they fired on him, hit that vehicle, hit him…over something relatively minor – at this busy intersection – it just makes you shake your head.”
The two suspects fled on foot. Police created a perimeter around a house in the 800 block of Franklin where witnesses say two people ran. Police called everyone out of the house and were able to apprehend one of the suspects.
Police say they have one woman involved in the incident in custody. The other suspect, an 18-20 year old male, described as black, with a thin build, 5-feet-8 to 6-feet tall, is still at large.
Police say the gun has not yet been recovered and they presume the suspect is armed and dangerous.
