Michigan’s Upper Penninsula Just Had Its Lightest Winter On Record
It doesn't take a keen eye to notice that our winter was on the very light end, with us having that one snowstorm in January and random snowfall that didn't really stick more than a day. I think I can speak for most of us when I say it was incredible not having to scrap off our cars every morning.
No one enjoyed it more than the 10 people who live in the Upper Peninsula, as we've finally learned the UP's total snowfall count for this winter and it was significantly below the norm.
Snowhere Near The Average
Earlier this week, Upper Michigan's source for news, sports, and weather since 1956 TV6 & FOX UP shared the total Snowfall Standings from October 1st to now and compared it to normal annual snowfall levels. While some places like Tamarack and Eagle River got 173 inches and 153 respectively, they were among the only cities in the UP to hit their average.

Some places like Ironwood and Ontonagon were 100 inches below their averages, with Ironwood getting 82 inches of snowfall when they usually average 185 inches. Ontonagon had an even larger difference, receiving 47 inches of snowfall when they typically average 175 inches.
Mixed Reactions
Yoopers have had mixed reactions to the lack of snowfall this year. Some have enjoyed it, with one Facebook user claiming
Every winter can be like the last!!!
For this user, it was business as usual.
Yeah that's me there in Tamarack...we always get our share, and sometimes other shares too.
However, there are those who were bummed about the lack of snowfall, with one user on Facebook saying her 'snowshoes are depressed" from hardly being used, and another pointing out how winter sports have struggled this year.
Many ski resorts closed early or were operated on restricted hours most of the winter as a result of the low snowfall totals. Snowfall totals will hopefully be more normal next year so these places and those who love the winter will get their due diligence.
