Are Data Centers Good or Bad? Are They Noisy?
There has been so much controversy regarding Data Centers as people don't want them in their area.
As of now Michigan has 97 Data Centers, 79 are operational, 2 under construction and 16 planned. Surprisingly we have 14 in Grand Rapids, including Switch, with more hoping to land here and around our West Michigan area.

Citizen arguments against the centers has been their huge need for power and water, and what that might do to homeowners costs.
But, I've never heard an argument against noise. That's right, NOISE! Hmmm, I always thought they would be quiet. After all they're not building anything so what is the big worry?
After seeing this post on the website, Gizmodo.com, about a facility in Dowagiac, Michigan, maybe there is something to worry about.
"Detroit reporter named Mike Duffy of WXYZ-TV captured a story about a data center emitting what sounds like a demonic scream that seems like it makes every second in this community a form of torture I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. The noise is there 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and people live right across the street."

It turns out these are largely crypto mining rigs making this noise. To me, what in the world is a crypto mining rig?
No, they are not digging in the ground looking for crypto, but that's your vision, right?
By definition, a crypto mining rig is a computer system purpose-built to mine digital currencies by solving cryptographic puzzles. That is way beyond me, but let's say it is a big part of the computer system that makes noise. Yikes!
Not all data centers are mining crypto, but Dowagiac in Southwest Michigan sure has a problem. I wouldn't want to be living in that neighborhood.
