What’s New at Muskallonge Lake State Park

Thanks to a newly completed accessible boardwalk, visitors to Muskallonge Lake State Park in the Upper Peninsula can now enjoy stunning views of Lake Superior like never before.

According to the Michigan DNR, $995,000 project replaced a wooden staircase that had been damaged by storms, creating a more durable and inclusive pathway through the trees to one of the most scenic stretches of shoreline in the state.

The new boardwalk winds through the forest canopy, ending with a gorgeous view of Lake Superior and an accessible path down to the water. This makes it easier for visitors of all abilities to experience the natural beauty of Michigan’s northern coast.

It's just one of several upgrades underway at Muskallonge Lake State Park. A brand-new bathhouse has also been added, and road paving projects are in progress to improve access throughout the park. As part of that work, both the campground and boating access site are closed through October 1, 2025.

Muskallonge Lake State Park sits between Grand Marais and Newberry, surrounded by Lake Superior State Forest. It's known for its quiet, rustic setting and dark skies, making it great for camping, stargazing, and rock hunting. The park offers access to both Lake Superior and the smaller, inland Muskallonge Lake.

Funding for Michigan’s State Park Improvements

This improvement is just one of 168 projects being completed across Michigan’s state parks and trails, funded by $273 million in federal relief dollars through the American Rescue Plan Act. These investments are aimed at improving accessibility, safety, and infrastructure statewide.
