
Ottawa County Campground with Yurts, Treehouses to Open Soon
Last fall an Ottawa County Park celebrated its grand reopening. One thing we were still waiting for was the campground with treehouses, yurts, and tent space to open up to the the public — that time is almost here!

Years in the making, Ottawa Sands Park is a multimillion dollar project that's redeveloped decommissioned sand mines on 345 acres that runs alongside the Grand River. It's near Lake Michigan and also features an 80-acre in-land lake.

Renovations have included new restrooms and parking, paved 1.6 mile Lake Loop trail, accessible benches, and a universally accessible kayak launch.
Another feature of the park is the Idema Explorers Camp, made possible by a $3.48 million donation from the Bill and Bea Idema Foundation.

Original plans for the Ottawa County camp included three treehouses, five yurts, and 10 tent pads, along with a universally accessible boardwalk and accommodations, and a communal fire pit by the natural surface trail around the in-land lake, and marked hiking trails. Here's an early rendering:

Idema Explorers Camp will celebrate its grand opening May 22. Remarks will start at 3:30 p.m., then there is an open house from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for you to explore the treehouses, yurts, and tent pads!
