Michigan Schools May Soon Offer Firearm and Hunter Safety Classes
Michigan high school students may soon have the chance to take firearm and hunter safety classes as electives.
High School Electives
When I attended high school (a long time ago), typical electives included auto shop, metal shop, wood shop, home economics, art, first aid, and typing. Simple classes that could help students get a start in the job market right after graduation.

Michigan May Offer Gun Safety & Hunting Classes in Schools
Many Michigan families are into the outdoors, whether it's hunting, fishing, camping, or target shooting with firearms and archery. Having firearm and hunter safety available as electives would be a great opportunity for students.
According to ABC 12, Michigan lawmakers have passed House Bill 4285, which directs the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Education to develop a course for high schools to teach students.
Don't worry, parents, the firearm and hunter safety classes are not mandatory for students to take or to graduate, and they won't be bringing firearms to class. These classes are about firearm safety and hunter safety.
I have taken the Michigan hunter safety course, and my two boys have taken the class. Safety is essential when taking a firearm into the woods. Many boys and girls are interested in gun safety and target shooting. What better way to introduce students to outdoor activities and gun safety than by having the classes as an option at school?

The instructors of the firearm and hunter safety class would be certified by the DNR. Another benefit is that, as semester-long classes, they would allow for a more thorough approach to firearm and hunter safety
Before we celebrate too much about these new potential opportunities for Michigan high school students, the bill will need to be passed in the Michigan Senate and require the signature of Governor Gretchen Whitmer. If Big Gretch inks the deal, schools could begin offering the new course by this fall.
